Artisan secures consent for 168 Edinburgh homes

Artisan Real Estate has secured planning approval to construct 168 homes in Edinburgh.

The Scottish capital’s city council unanimously granted the proposal that will see Artisan renovate the former Caledonian Brewery in Shandon.

Heineken UK, the former operator of the brewery, invited bids for the site after operations ceased and chose Artisan due to the developer’s plans to preserve its legacy.

Artisan will preserve much of the 1869 architecture of the site that ceased operations in 2022.

The brewery currently houses a vast amount of brewing equipment which Artisan intends to ‘upcycle’ as much as possible.

“This is a hugely exciting opportunity to breathe new life into a complex and historically important city centre site, providing a high-quality mix of new homes and affordable housing in line with the Council’s policy to help tackle the city’s housing emergency,” said David Westwater, managing director for Scotland at Artisan.

“Artisan’s UK-wide expertise as a regeneration specialist will now deliver a sustainable new residential community in an accessible city centre location that will respect, preserve and enhance the rich history of the Caledonian Brewery.

“Working closely with our heritage experts, we have unravelled the different layers of history and development which have governed the evolution of the site.”
